What is the difference between a massage and a sports massage?

Massage can be divided into many different categories. All of these categories, however, are based on classical massage techniques and their variations. In a massage, various techniques are used, such as stroking and friction.

A sports massage is a form of classical massage that, in addition to basic techniques, uses more precise methods—for example, to treat muscle origin and insertion points or scar tissue. In sports massage, the therapist may also stretch muscles or relieve pain using techniques such as trigger point massage. Sports massage usually addresses a specific problem, such as headaches, pain, tightness, or numbness, whereas a regular massage focuses more on relaxation.

It is often assumed that sports massage is always performed with more pressure than a regular massage, but this is not true. The intensity of the treatment is always adjusted according to the client’s wishes. At SUHK, you will receive exactly the treatment you want and need!

Can you get a sports massage even if you’re not an athlete?

Sports massage is usually performed to address an existing issue. Age or athletic background does not matter. Sports massage is suitable for everyone.

When should I choose Kipuasema?

The SUHK Kipuasema is a concept designed to make booking an appointment easier. Pain can take many forms and have many causes. It can be acute or chronic, the result of an injury or overuse, sharp, dull, intense, or mild. It can appear in the knee while running, in the back after sitting for a long time, or in the neck in the morning. Pain can come on suddenly or worsen gradually. You may experience pain at rest or only during certain movements.

At the SUHK Kipuasema, you do not need to know why you have pain or where it came from. The professionals at the SUHK Kipuasema have extensive knowledge of how different parts of the body function and how pain works. You only need to know which part of your body hurts, select it on the kipuasema, and then choose a suitable therapist, location, or appointment time.

Why is a personal identity number asked during the visit?

All of our clients are asked for their personal identity number during their visit so that we can update the information required by law in SUHK’s patient record system. SUHK’s massage therapists, physiotherapists, and osteopaths are healthcare professionals approved by Valvira and are subject to the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health’s regulations on patient records (Finlex 298/2009, Section 10) and the related documentation obligations in the same way as nurses or doctors.

All healthcare providers using electronic patient record systems must make their entries visible to clients in Omakanta. This applies not only to SUHK but also to all other providers in the field. Recording information in Omakanta requires identifying the client using their personal identity number. The information is kept confidential, stored according to legal requirements, and is not shared with others. Identifying a person using their personal identity number increases patient safety and ensures smoother treatment.

What is the Kanta fee and why is it charged to new clients?

Entering new clients into the Kanta system incurs costs for SUHK. For this reason, we charge new clients a one-time Kanta fee of 3 euros to cover these costs. The personal identity number is also requested during the first visit.

The healthcare documentation requirement does not apply to sports or fitness services, so the Kanta fee is not charged for these services. The personal identity number is also not requested from clients participating in sports or fitness services.
