Physiotherapy

People often seek physiotherapy when pain does not go away on its own or when the body does not feel like it is functioning normally. Common reasons include lower back pain, neck pain, persistent shoulder tension, shoulder pain, knee pain, or issues in the hip area. Symptoms may result from an injury, overuse, or develop gradually without a clear incident.

Physiotherapy – when the body isn’t functioning normally or pain limits everyday life

Many people look for answers to questions such as when should I go to physiotherapy or can physiotherapy help with back pain. Often there is uncertainty: is the issue serious enough, do you need a doctor’s referral, or can physiotherapy help with long-lasting pain? You can come to physiotherapy without a referral – even when the pain is not constant but keeps returning.

Many musculoskeletal issues, such as persistent lower back pain, neck and shoulder symptoms, shoulder overuse pain, or knee pain during movement, are related to physical load and motor control. After an injury, the body often adapts its movement patterns without you noticing, which can maintain pain or shift symptoms elsewhere. Rest or massage alone is not always enough if the underlying cause of the pain is not addressed.

In physiotherapy, the body is viewed as a whole: how movement and load work together. The aim is to understand why the pain has developed and how it can be addressed in a sustainable way. This approach is also central in sports physiotherapy, where the goal is to safely return to activity after an injury or prevent overuse injuries from recurring.

SUHK’s quality and training philosophy is reflected in a practical and clear approach. Clients understand where their pain or issue comes from and how body function can be improved in daily life, at work, or during exercise.

Physiotherapy is suitable for acute injuries, long-term pain conditions, and situations where there is no constant pain but movement feels uncertain or restricted. As body function becomes clearer, pain often eases, movement feels more confident, and trust in your own body returns.

Physiotherapy is not only treatment for pain, but a way to understand your body and influence issues before they start to control everyday life.

Before your first physiotherapy visit – when you’re not sure if now is the right time

Most people coming to physiotherapy for the first time are unsure whether they should. The pain may not be constant, the issue may be hard to describe, or the feeling may be more vague than clearly painful. This is completely normal – and in fact the most common reason to book an appointment.

You do not need to wait until the pain becomes severe or until you have a diagnosis. Recurrent stiffness, uncertainty in movement, imbalance in the body, or a feeling that your body is under uneven strain are all valid reasons to come. If you are wondering whether physiotherapy is for you, that is often already a sign that your body needs attention.

No doctor’s referral is needed, and you do not have to be able to name your problem precisely. The first visit is a calm session where your body function is assessed together – without pressure or forcing.

Physiotherapy does not automatically mean a long treatment period or multiple visits. Even one session can clarify the situation, reduce pain, and provide understanding of why your body feels the way it does.

Often after the first visit, movement feels more confident, the body feels calmer, and more like your own again. The goal is not to “fix” you, but to help your body function as it should.

If you are unsure, it does not mean you are in the wrong place – it often means you are exactly at the right point to book an appointment.

You do not need to prepare specifically for physiotherapy. Comfortable everyday clothing is enough, and you do not need to describe your symptoms perfectly in advance. The first visit proceeds calmly, and nothing is done by force or through pain. One session does not commit you to anything, but helps clarify the situation and next steps.

SUHK physiotherapists are also experts in manual treatment

SUHK physiotherapists are highly skilled in manual techniques and hands-on treatment. A strong background in massage gives an excellent foundation for treating muscle tightness and stiffness. Many issues require movement and strengthening, but often it is easier to start exercises after improving mobility through manual treatment techniques.

From 1 May 2025, physiotherapy is eligible for Kela reimbursement. You can receive reimbursement for 4 visits per calendar year, amounting to €15 per visit. SUHK uses a direct reimbursement system, meaning the Kela compensation is deducted directly at checkout. You can come to physiotherapy directly without a referral or doctor’s appointment. Feel free to contact us if you want to check whether physiotherapy is suitable for your condition before booking.
